Position Summary

A Counselor Apprentice is a former camper who has been identified has a high potential leadership candidate. In this position the YLP Counselor Apprentice will engage with peers in a practical, highly engaging, thought provoking environment which enables them to further develop their leadership skills and style under the guidance of ESF mentors. Young Leaders will gain an understanding of their personal leadership style, build self-confidence and self-awareness, and learn in a setting that encourages practice and participation.

Position Objective/Purpose

We are seeking motivated YLP Counselor Apprentices who believe deeply in the organization’s mission and who have a desire to develop personally and professionally.

Position Scope Factors

Counselor Apprentices are employed in Day, Senior, Sports and Dream Camp in the following age groups;

  • Day Camp: 4 – 8 year olds
  • Senior Camp: 9 - 10 year olds
  • Sports Camp: 6 – 10 year olds
  • Dream Camp: 6 – 11 year olds (Trinity College & Girard College locations only)

Essential Job Responsibilities

  1. Attend daily morning briefing with Director
  2. Assist counselors in preparing drop-off and pick-up area
  3. Greet and welcome campers as they arrive to camp
  4. Assist counselors in taking care of the administrative morning and afternoon responsibilities 
  5. Follow daily schedule
  6. Assist campers with their food/drink during snack and lunch
  7. Group supervision of campers with attention to: behavior and group management, health, safety, security, and personal and skill development
  8. Attend weekly workshop with YLP Director
  9. Promote and actively participate in all camper activities & projects
  10. Work effectively with co-counselors and collaborate on daily responsibilities
  11. Serve as a positive role model to campers
  12. Follow the ESF Code and maintain the ESF Look at all times
  13. Exhibit ESF Core Values at all times and to adhere to all company policies
  14. Have fun
  15. Other responsibilities as assigned

Experience Requirements

  1. 16 or 17 years old
  2. Former ESF camper
  3. Community or school involvement, examples include but are not limited to; babysitting, academic/athletic tutoring , youth volunteer, classroom assistant, religious education teacher, clubs/organizations (required)
  4. Previous work experience (preferred)

Other Skill Requirements

  1. Outstanding communication skills which include the ability to use clear, concise and grammatically correct written and oral language in all aspects of professional interaction with campers, their families, peers, leadership team and the larger community

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to and takes direction from YLP Director. May also take direction from and is overall accountable to the Site Director.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to push/pull, lift and carry a minimum of 35lbs
  2. Endurance to work outside and on your feet for 6-8 hours per day
  3. Ability to respond to emergency situations which may require running (up to 1 mile in some cases) and climbing stairs.
  4. Good physical condition which enables candidate to execute all responsibilities associated with this position
