Position Summary

A Mentor is responsible for supervising students, promoting and actively participating in all after school activities, providing a safe and fun learning environment, and serving as a positive role model for students.

Position Objective/Purpose

We are seeking motivated team members who believe deeply in the organization’s mission and who display a record of achievement in effective supervision & management of youth as it pertains to this position, building positive relationships and ensuring the safety and well-being of people of all ages.

Position Scope Factors

Mentors work with students in 1st through 8th grade. We are seeking motivated team members who believe deeply in the organization’s mission. Mentors must be able to effectively supervise and manage youth while building positive relationships and ensuring the safety and well-being of people of all ages.

 

Mentors are employed at the following sites;

  • Temple University - Philadelphia, PA (Mon/Wed 3:30PM - 5:30PM)
  • Bache-Martin Elementary – Philadelphia, PA (Tues/Thurs 3:00PM - 5:30PM)
  • Cornerstone Christian Academy – Philadelphia, PA (Mon/Wed 3:00PM – 5:15PM)

 

Mentors are required to commit to at least two afternoons per week, Mondays and Wednesday or Tuesdays and Thursdays. 

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Group supervision of students with attention to: behavior and group management, health, safety, security, and personal and skill development
  • Work with a group of 4-8 students on academic support including homework help and literacy development
  • Utilize a variety of character development activities to increase the students’ self-esteem and help to establish a value system
  • Teach or assist with other programs including choice clubs, special events, themed projects
  • Promote and actively participate in all student activities and projects
  • Work effectively with Co-Mentors and Counselors and collaborate on daily responsibilities
  • Attend bi-weekly meeting
  • Complete assigned paperwork
  • Exhibit Dream Camp core values and adhere to all company policies
  • Have fun
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Experience Requirements

  1. Previous experience working with children, examples include but are not limited to; babysitting, academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant, religious education teacher
  2. Previous experience working with urban youth (preferred)

Education Requirements

  1. Minimum of 18 years of age
  2. High School Graduate pursuing college degree

Other Skill Requirements

  1. Outstanding communication skills which include the ability to use clear, concise and grammatically correct written and oral language in all aspects of professional interaction with campers, their families, peers, leadership team and the larger community

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to and takes direction from Program Director.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to push/pull, lift and carry a minimum of 35lbs
  2. Endurance to work outside and on your feet for 6-8 hours per day
  3. Ability to respond to emergency situations which may require running (up to 1 mile in some cases) and climbing stairs.
  4. Good physical condition which enables candidate to execute all responsibilities associated with this position
