Position Summary

An Activity Specialist is responsible for the supervision of campers, the implementation of camp curriculum, promoting and actively participating in all camp activities, providing a safe and fun learning environment, and serving as a positive role model for campers and counselors. The Canoeing & Fishing Activity Specialist is responsible for ensuring the safety of all people in the pond area, learning the procedures to maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of the Canoeing & Fishing equipment, and overseeing the Waterfront Lifeguards.

Position Scope Factors

Canoeing & Fishing Specialists are employed in the following camps;

  • Day Camp: 7 – 8 year olds
  • Senior Camp: 9 – 15 year olds

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Group supervision of campers with attention to: behavior and group management, health and safety, security, and personal and skill development
  • Organize and prepare daily lesson plans in a fun and creative manner
  • Motivate campers by creating fun for them in your activity (i.e. - songs, games, cheers, etc.)
  • Encourage creativity and critical thinking while making a positive impact on each of your campers
  • Use effective classroom management skills to lead the activity and effectively create an inclusive, fun environment
  • Promote and actively participate in all camper activities
  • Complete assigned paperwork
  • Serve as a positive role model to campers
  • Follow the ESF Code and maintain the ESF Look at all times
  • Exhibit the ESF Core Values at all times and to adhere to all company policies
  • Maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of the Canoeing & Fishing equipment
  • Facilitate paddling lessons to teach campers basic maneuvers, safety precautions and watercraft terminology
  • Other responsibilities as assigned (such as PM OT Sign in and Transition)
  • Facilitate fishing lessons to teach campers basic catch and release techniques
  • Have fun

Experience Requirements

  1. Previous experience working with children
  2. Preference will be given to candidates with formal training or American Canoe Association certification
  3. Must be comfortable working outdoors, regardless of weather conditions
  4. Previous camp counselor/teaching  experience (preferred)

Certification Requirements

  1. Current American Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certification
  2. Preference given to candidates who have current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification with add-on Waterfront Lifeguarding Module (or willing to become certified upon employment)

Education Requirements

  1. Minimum of 18 years of age
  2. High School Graduate pursuing college degree

Other Skill Requirements

  1. Outstanding communication skills which include the ability to use clear, concise and grammatically correct written and oral language in all aspects of professional interaction with campers, their families, peers, leadership team and the larger community

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to and takes direction from Senior Camp Director. May also take direction from and is overall accountable to the Site Director.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to push/pull, lift and carry a minimum of 35Ibs
  1. Endurance to work outside and on your feet for 6-8 hours per day
  2. Ability to respond to emergency situations which may require running (up to 1 mile in some cases) and climbing stairs.
  3. Good physical condition which enables candidate to execute all responsibilities associated with this position
