  • Position Objective/Purpose

    This essential member of the communications team will ensure that ESF is portrayed as the most exciting and innovative summer program provider within our varied regional markets. As a Communications Intern, you will report to both the Site Director at your camp, as well as the ESF Communication Manager, at ESF Headquarters on a daily basis. You will be responsible for providing exciting photographs and video clips/projects documenting camp life, as well as brief descriptive text on a daily basis. This information will be shared with parents throughout various communication outlets (i.e. email, blog, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).  All communication vehicles will be held to the highest standards of quality and excellence while reflecting and demonstrating the core values of ESF. Throughout the summer, all digital assets will be compiled to build a library of marketing collateral that will be utilized by ESF in our year-round marketing efforts.

    Position Scope Factors

    Location:

    • The Marketing Intern will work on-site at one of ESF’s sites local to the Intern.

    Compensation:

    • Paid internship (course credit opportunities available)
    • (OPTIONAL) Additional opportunities for summer compensation include substituting for a counselor role on Mondays of each week, as well as working in a counselor role in ESF’s extended day program (times vary per location)

    Essential Job Responsibilities

    After a training period, the Communications Intern will be responsible for the following:

    • Capturing and editing high-quality photos and videos of all camp highlights (guidance will be provided to identify key opportunities) for various social media outlets, digital albums, and the “Memories” slide show at the end of the summer. Photos must feature a wide range of ages, mix of both male and female campers, and diversity.
    • Cataloging all photos for efficient coordination of the multi-media slide show as well as public online albums for camper parents to view using Flickr and or Google Photos. The expectation is to capture enough high-quality photos to fill pre-identified slide show segments to run an average of 23 minutes in duration.
    • Follow guidelines for organizational framework for tagging and repurposing assets for optimization as well as writing descriptive content for social media, YouTube, ESF website, etc.
    • Taking video clips of “day in the life” camper activities as well as special events throughout the summer. This can take the form of interviews or simply capturing daily activities. In addition, camper testimonials, parent testimonials, and staff testimonials will be included in the requirements for the delivery of digital assets. This will also include video project requests and specific assignments for the end of summer slideshow.    
    • Master the site-level calendar of events and map out a weekly schedule in advance, knowing where to be and when to capture events. This will require collaboration with Site Directors, Activity Specialists and various team members on-site.
    • Complete 2-3 small-scope summative videography projects that capture the energy and magic of camp. Project specifications will be communicated during training.
    • Provide updates on the progress of the projects with the specified Communications Manager at Headquarters.
    • Manage all aspects of video editing for each project and work with various teams to implement changes.
    • Participation in weekly team calls with fellow interns and the Communications Manager to discuss best practices and opportunities for improvements.

    Experience Requirements

      • Strong video and photography experience required (photo and video editing software experience is a plus).
      • Experience uploading, cataloging and tagging photos and videos in Flickr, Google Photos, and Dropbox a plus.
      • A background in photography, and digital video experience preferred.
      • Must have strong creative writing skills.
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to ensure the necessary editing of projects is communicated effectively with various team members.
      • Highly developed time management skills in order to complete tasks to meet deadlines.
      • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task as you will be completing multiple projects at once.
      • Ability to work independently and problem solve.
      • Interpersonal skills as you will work with multiple team members on site as well as the Communications Manager.
      • The ability to be flexible and handle unpredictable situations with ease.
      • Attention to detail and the ability to edit video.
      • All candidates must submit writing, photography and videography samples during interview process.

       

    Education Requirements

    • An undergraduate Junior or Senior, graduate student or recent graduate with an interest in marketing, photography/videography, PR, journalism, and multi-media communications.

    Reporting Relationships

    • The Marketing Intern reports directly to the Site Director on-site and the Marketing Department at Headquarters.

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

    • This position involves extended periods of activity, moving around the campsite, to ensure all critical images/videos are captured.
    • This position requires considerable time at a computer workstation for editing and cataloging.
    • Some local travel and occasional distance travel to events and to neighboring camp sites.

    • Writing multiple weekly blog posts to feature activities in Mini, Day, Sports, Senior, Tennis, and Specialty Camps in addition to capturing special events. 
    • Capturing and editing high-quality photos of all camp highlights (guidance will be provided to identify key opportunities) for blogs, social media, newsletters, and summer memories slide show. Photos must feature a wide range of ages, mix of both male and female campers, and diversity.
    • Taking video clips of “day in the life” camper activities as well as special events throughout the summer.  This can take the form of interviews or simply capturing daily activities. Examples include features such as: Teepee Village chants, Aquatics events (camper achievements), Tennis Tournaments, Specialty Camp events (weekly demonstrations), Camp shows – Mini, Day, Senior. In addition, camper testimonials, parent testimonials, and staff testimonials will be included in the requirements for the delivery of digital assets.    
    • Participation in weekly team calls with fellow interns and the Marketing team to discuss best practices and opportunities for improvements. 
    • Cataloging all photos for efficient coordination of the multi-media slide show.  The expectation is to capture enough high-quality photos to fill pre-identified slide show segments to run an average of 23 minutes in duration.

    • Development of numerous communication pieces including:
      • Develop organizational framework for tagging and repurposing assets for optimization for social media, you tube, blog posts, website, newsletters, etc.
      • Manage all aspects of editing for each project and work with various teams to implement changes.
      • Provide frequent updates on the progress of the projects.
      • Travel to local ESF sites, when necessary, to support fellow interns and assure assigned tasks are completed  
    • Draft weekly blog posts across all camps offered on site.
    • Follow specific guidelines for photo and video clips.  
    • Generate digital assets; representative of site. This requires collaborating with Site Directors to gather relevant photo and video content.  Organize, track, and categorize photo across all camp segments (day, sports, senior, etc.).

    Qualifications

    • Highly developed time management skills in order to complete tasks to meet deadlines.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to ensure the necessary editing of projects is communicated effectively with various team members.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task as you will be completing multiple projects at once.

    • A background in journalism, photography, and digital video experience preferred.
